A group of 30 students attended the World Vision’s Global Leadership Conventions: 40 Hour Famine Symposium. The students were given an opportunity to learn about global issues, empower them to become inspiring leaders and take action. The event embraced innovative ways of learning about inequalities and global hunger. This year, students were invited to reflect on “The world I see… And so I choose to…”
Last year we were part of 90,000 young kiwis who had banded together and raised $1.8 million to help children affected by the Syrian Refugee Crisis. 2017 has seen yet another year of huge support from Sancta Maria College students, parents, staff and the school community at large as the 40 Hour Famine Student Committee worked to facilitate fun fund-raising activities in and outside school in an effort to be the ‘agent of change’ – making a positive difference as a community.
Their activities ranged from colourful face painting, sausage sizzles and a 40-hour famine walk led by Mrs. Cummings. Point View Drive was the walking routes, offering some amazing views of the parents and students who joined in the walk. This walk was a chance for the 40-hour famine members to get together before the 40-hour famine started, where over 400 students from Sancta Maria took part in the challenge in order to support the children in Syria
This year students were able to sign up for the 40 Hour Famine on-line and parents and friends of the school were able to make online donations. Together we raised $9304.60. The funds raised go towards supporting World Vision’s Child-Friendly Spaces in Jordan, where education and counseling are provided.
We are very proud of all the students for their compassionate effort and contribution to this year’s 40 Hour Famine.
A small group of Year 12 students have worked hard behind the scenes. We look forward to their continual leadership next year. Together, let ‘Our Generation Unite’ and let us be the ‘agent of positive change’ in our world.
