An annual event our music ensembles look forward to every year is when St Mary’s and Holy Trinity hosts the annual KBB Festival which showcases each school’s talent in music. Sancta Maria College’s Chamber Orchestra, Big Band and Concert Band were lucky enough to take part in this event.
The Big Band, conducted by Mr Cho, played 5 different songs – one song being a student composition by Helen Pahulu. Featured soloists included Peter Brzowski, Jenna Aspeling, Helen Pahulu, Adrian Vargas and Minju Kim. They came out of the competition with a well-merited Silver award!
Our school’s Concert Band also played 5 pieces in the Holy Trinity Cathedral and came out with another Silver award. They had previously won bronze, so this was a thrilling moment for all of them. Many thanks to Mr Hamish Arthur who conducted the concert band and led us to gaining this award.
Mr Gibbs lead our Chamber Orchestra with 4 pieces, ‘Dance of the Swans’, ‘Where’er You Walk’, ‘Voi che Sapete’ and ‘Barcarolle’. Anna Nguyen and Kelly Qi our two sopranos featured with a solo each and as a duet for our finale. Unfortunately the Chamber Orchestra did not receive an award this year, but thiswas a huge learning experience for some of our new players.
Special mention to Jenna Aspeling, Minju Kim, Samantha Bottom, Stella Kwon, Felix Cheng and Lorenzo Cruz who were in all three of our marvellous ensembles this year.
