Four of our students attended a one day event in the heart of Newmarket. The Women in IT initiative held at Techtorium was designed for young women who are wanting to pursue tertiary study in the industry of information communication technology (ICT).
The day started with a programming workshop. Here we were given a presentation that opened the doors to programming. We used software called Visual Studios, which was an introduction to the world of programming. We were shown the basics of the program and with the help of present students at Techtorium, we were able to create our own program.
This was followed by a presentation by the first guest speaker, Jacinda Ardern, the youngest elected sitting MP in parliament. She shared her challenges as being the “under dog” in politics due to her age and gender, and encouraged us to not let these two factors govern our choices, but to be open to everything and be “boss girls”.
The second guest speaker, another inspirational woman, shared her experiences working in several management roles in the telecommunication industry. Akesa Tangitau informed us of the industry of ICT and shared some tips and tricks to dealing with customers!
The second workshop followed where we worked with a current student at Techtorium to disassemble a system unit of a computer. This was a hands on activity that opened our minds to the complexities of the inside of a system unit. We were then challenged to reassemble the unit which left us scratching our heads!
We would like to give special thanks to Mrs Caudy for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this incredibly inspiring and eventful day.
