In remembrance of ANZAC Day on the 25 April, Sancta Maria College was invited to create a visual and informative display for the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association (RSA) Howick to exhibit in the Howick Library. This task integrated into our Year 10 Social Sciences unit for term one – ‘Serving the Empire – World War One’.
The display consisted of student-made newspaper front cover pages reporting battles of World War One, ornamented with a border of paper poppies. Various classes were allocated different topics: ‘WWI on Land’, ‘WW1 on Sea’, and ‘WW1 in the air’. Classes focusing on WW1 on land incorporated aspects of a soldier’s life like trench conditions, weapons, uniforms, tools, gas attacks, warfare, medics and battlefield experiences. WW1 on Sea included the Battles of Heligoland, Dogger Bank, Jutland, and the sinking of the Lusitania. WW1 in the Air contained an aspect, story, or experience of a New Zealand pilot in the war. Furthermore, students received paper poppies and wrote facts on each petal from WW1 relating to land, air, or sea battles.
The ANZAC display for the RSA allowed Year 10 students to practise skills like collating information authentic to World War One and being enriched with understanding of New Zealand’s involvement in the war. Moreover, our student’s enlightening work continues the legacy of commemorating Aotearoa’s brave soldiers on ANZAC day – ‘Lest We Forget.’
The presentations will be on display at the Howick Library from Wednesday 24 April, 10am – 5pm and on ANZAC Day from 1 – 5 pm.
